Are you prepared? August and September tend to be the more active months of hurricane season in Tampa Bay area.
Preventative maintenance NOW can save on costly repairs later. Below are the top 7 tips that will ensure your home is ready and you have greater peace of mind:
1. Trim Back Trees – Trim overhanging branches and make sure “dead wood” limbs are removed and your trees are healthy.
2. Check Your Roof – Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles. Repair areas as needed.
3. Clean Gutters and Downspouts – Remove debris and ensure they can handle heavy rains. I personally LOVE having gutter guards on my gutters. I have so many fruit trees and oak trees my gutters would be full 365 days without them protecting my gutters.
4. Take Photos – Document everything inside AND outside your home, including your roof. You can use these photos as evidence in case you need to make an insurance claim.
5. Reinforce Windows – Have a plan to reinforce your windows from high winds and projectiles. That could be hurricane shutters, plywood, or investing in hurricane-impact windows. Once a hurricane is announced, you won’t be able to find these things.
6. Install Hurricane Clips – These attach your roof to the walls of your home, reinforcing it from high winds. *An added bonus… installing these will often save you $$$ on your home insurance!
7. Create Emergency Kit – Make sure you have food and water for all people and animals in your home, batteries, flashlights, and more. Consider also having a “go-bag” ready in case you choose to evacuate. 👉Click this link to download our Emergency Hurricane Prep list
I always take the attitude of prepare for the worst and then relax and expect the best. This way I avoid that week before a hurricane hysteria that takes over so many people.
